Buzznet just published Bright Black Heaven in its entirity for streaming. After listening to a couple of song I can safely say that some songs have been remastered and are different from the early mp3s that have been floating around (This happened before with Bitter For Sweet)
Listen to Bright Black Heaven nao!
Make sure you tell us in the comments what your favorite songs were!

Better than I expected it to be.
Here are my thoughts (Not necessarily a review):
It was far better than I expected, but not as good as CexCells. I really did enjoy the majority of it, excluding “The Witness” and “Say Red”. “Afterdark” and “Down Here” would have fit much better on this album in comparison to the more upbeat and poppy tracks. I suppose I appreciate CexCells more because of the dark ambience it had. Not to mention the production value and album art seemed far more superior to me for some reason.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of tracks I love off of the first listen (i.e. “Everybody’s Friends” and “Let’s Be Honest”). It’s just those few cheap songs that throw off the album’s mood. Had they been swapped for some better ones, I’d claim this to be equally as good as the previous album.
If this were a proper review, I’d probably give it an 8/10. The weaker tracks really bring my interest down, but the good tracks are genuinely amazing listens.
Honestly, I don’t like it. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but right now I’m disappointed.
I’ve waited 3 years for this album and the best songs already came out years before (Bliss, I’ll Lit Ship) and most aren’t even on the album (Down Here, Mouth to Mouth, Afterdark).
Deconstructing Gods is my favorite, hands down.
I might be the only person who really doesn’t care for Deconstructing Gods. Huge fan of “Fade to White” and “Say Red” (especially the end of “Say Red”, which may be the single best thing they perform live, in my opinion)
Overall though, I very much enjoy this. It’s not at all my typical genre of music, and I admit I probably wouldn’t have ever listened to them if it weren’t Davey and Jade. But it’s very danceable, singable, and a good set of songs to entertain me.
And that’s all I need.
Let’s Be Honest is probably my favorite along with Say Red. Although they both aren’t very innovative in terms of doing something new for Blaqk Audio, they do make astounding pop songs, and they may very well end up being my favorite songs by the group themself. Deconstructing Gods was as amazing as the title made it seem like it was going to be so it’s another favorite. I put off listening to (or at leaast tried) already released songs until the album came out (or streamed in this case) and they are still amazing. Ill lit Ships used to be a perfect song in my opinion but I think it’s slightly fallen from grace in that sense. I kind of wish it wasn’t the closer because although it is dark, it isn’t as deep/hard-hitting as Wake Up… I also am finally warming up to The Witness which is cool, and I also just realized it has some of the best lyrics Davey has written: “Who needs forgiveness, when we all speak fluent lies?”. Fade To White was definitely a better track than expected while Everybody’s Friends may have to be my least favorite. It still has some cool moments but vocally it should stand out more. Still catchy though, and the last track that’s really new on the album, With Your Arms Around You, is actually a grower. Jade is excellent here for sure and the chorus is amazing especially that last one. The album has its apparent flaws, and I hate to say most of them come from Davey. Someties his voice just dwells into some weird low territory that doesn’t fit as well as it could/should. There are songs where this is not a problem at all but sometimes it sounds weird. Luckily it doesn’t happen often and it only does on the songs we haven’t heard studio versions of. Still, BBH is a spectacle, sorry, the spectacle that fans have been waiting for. I don’t think it tops CexCells simply because it lacks some epic song work (like on Snuff On Digital) as well as slower tempo songs that display true innovation (Cites of Night and Bitter For Sweet). Still, this is an easy 9/10 for me.
Imma just gonna say that a great song that was pretty different and stood out from the rest, wasn’t included on the CD, but I don’t know if it’s good/bad because it would have let out another new song. Afterdark anyone?

IMHO …
Cex Cells was a safe bet for the boys. It had very much an AFI vibe in terms of tone and lyrical style, as well as vocalizations (and to support this, I played Cex Cells for a friend, and they thought it sounded like AFI)….I feel with Cex Cells the two only scratched the surface of what they wanted to achieve within this genre. It was dark, moody, lethargic which is very much AFI. There were also very few stand out songs – and the ones which stand out the most tend to be fan favourites. (On a Friday, Again Again, Semiotic Love, Cities of Night).
BBH, on the other hand, is far more in line with what I was hoping Cex Cells to be. This album is a great, upbeat, octane rush that is paired well with some moderate paced pieces throughout, and is finished with a wonderful slow tempo song, Ill Lit Ships, that leaves the listener feeling breathless and given the time to reflect on the journey they just went. There is a beautiful tonal shift between the first and second half, where the first has a more optimistic feel, where the second transitions to a more darker style. You can hear the evidence in lyrical style, vocalizations, and even, for the most part, Jade’s programming.
BBH also sees Davey pushing his vocal talent in new directions, which is something I have found to be sorely overlooked by reviews. His pitch ranges from high to low in seconds, the delivery of many lines are done in a style not often heard by Mr.Havok. I find his talent on this album is perhaps the best I have heard since Sing the Sorrow – another album where he pushed his vocal boundaries.
Bringing this back to the songs, there are far more catchy hooks and loops on BBH than Cex Cells – both through the programming and the vocal work.
For those who have listened to what songs the boys have released over the past years, sure, I can see the frustration in getting an album with many of those songs already. However, if you are like me and have only listened to those songs in passing – if that – than this album holds many surprises. In fact, I have been able to find a new appreciation for Ill Lit Ships – which was a pre-released song I simply couldn’t get into. Now having it in the context of the album as a full body of work, the song now holds a dear spot in my heart.
Now…let the flame war begin
No flame war coming my friend. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. If some people don’t like the album and you do, well good for you and too bad for them hehe.
@ Max; I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one. Far too many times on this site have I seen someone give an opinion, only to be lambasted by the fangirls and boys (or those disgruntled because AFI is no longer punk rawk). It seems this site, and many other fan sites, are cess pools of both camps waiting to jump down someone’s throat in a rage of internet behaviour.
I typically avoid conversation on these type of sites UNLESS I feel my opinion will at the very least create some actual meaningful discussion.
Perhaps the biggest issue I have seen, with regards to BBH, is many people have already listened to the released songs a lot over the years – or are simply angered by the fact these already released songs have made it to the album (which is simply absurd in itself since, as far as I am aware, it was known these released songs were in fact pieces from BBH…so people are just being silly with that argument) anyways, with these skewed views, they are not able to sit back and give the album the respectful listen it requires simply based on the sense of “this ain’t nothin’ new.”
I follow BA/AFI news weekly. I knew of the released songs, listened to them maybe once or twice over the years. Some I enjoyed, others not so much. But, now, hearing them as they were intended in the order they were intended brings about a new appreciation for the work. As stand alone songs, many of these titles won’t make the grade (whilst others will) – however, when you listen to the album as a whole…these titles all of a sudden take on a new life; new meaning. The atmosphere, the tempo, the lyrical message…it all has a meaning that, when listened to in a sitting, fits in such a perfect way that it is almost indescribable.
As I made mention in my last post, Ill Lit Ships was a song I just didn’t get. It didn’t seem like BA. It was different and the pacing was all wrong for what I expected to hear from the boys on BBH. Then, listening to the whole album as it was intended, the one song I didn’t get as the closer all of a sudden turned into this fantastically located piece with all the right notes.
This album, in a lot of ways, is like a sexual encounter – which is a theme that is ever present in BA. Cold Wars begins as this rising action (no not a pun) that leads the way into this super charged experience that just does not let go. The tempos of each song after rises and falls in well practiced/executed manner, never really letting go of the listener despite a plethora of teases – and always building in tension to a big climatic experience. Then suddenly, that climax hits and is followed by the slowest song on the album, leaving you breathless, reflective, numb….much like the big climx in said encounter.
We try to remain objective here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The only time we really snap at people is when they’re rude towards others.
I’m sorry if you have ever expirenced hostility on this website, just know that you and your opinions are always welcome here and if someone starts a flame war, we will try our best to deal with it.
